COWDENBEATH MSP Annabelle Ewing has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, highlighting the Lochore Meadows Country parked based ‘Save the Cage’ campaign.

Save the Cage is about creating a mining heritage at the Meedies using a number of items the Frances Colliery currently stored at the former pit site. It is being spearheaded by Cowdenbeath man Robert Chalmers.

Speaking this week Ms Ewing said: “I had a question on the Business Bulletin to ask about the protection of mining heritage in Fife.

"Unfortunately, my question was not reached but I have now written to the Cabinet Secretary for Culture to highlight the issue I wanted to raise.

“There is an excellent campaign in my constituency called ‘Save the Cage’, set up by Robert Chalmers and others.

“The Colliery Cage, and other artefacts from Frances Colliery, are currently stored in Methil, and these local campaigners – whom I support – want to see these items displayed at the Lochore Meadows Country Park in Benarty".

The MSP added: “Putting these items on display in a public place would not only provide interest for visitors to the Lochore Meadows, they would help to ensure that these important pieces of this area’s mining heritage are preserved for future generations.

“I think this is a fantastic idea. A great deal of work has already been done locally by the campaign group but I would like to see what help the Cabinet Secretary might be able to provide to support their ambitions.”

The campaign has set up a fund to raise cash to transport the equipment to the Meedies.
