A MAN who "hugged" a boy and grunted in his ear "continues to be baffled" about why he carried out such an action.

Brian Sawers, 40, was appearing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Wednesday for the second day in a row after being imprisoned the previous day for an assault.

This time, he was being sentenced for an incident which took place on Cowdenbeath High Street on August 2.

He had earlier admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm when he approached a 15 year-old boy from behind, placed his arms around his body, placed his chest against his back and made a noise in his ear.

Depute fiscal, Rebecca Clark, said Sawers, of Peebles Street, Kirkcaldy, was "clearly very drunk".

She told the Court: "The child was approached at a crossing and he walked by him and almost hugged him from behind and grunted in his ear. He told police he had his arms around the boy and shouldn't have done it."

Solicitor Michael Sweeney said his client was struggling to explain the motivation behind his actions.

"He continues to be baffled as to what exactly happened during the course of this," he said. "He does not doubt the complainer would have been frightened.

"He had no recollection of what had happened. He had been drinking. The circumstances are bizarre and he has not been able to assist me by giving any explanation."

Sheriff Chris Shead described the offence as "highly unusual" and jailed him for three months to run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving.
