COWDENBEATH MSP Annabelle Ewing has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating Lochgelly High School on its success on being awarded the Silver Charter from LGBT Youth Scotland.

The school's pupils have worked hard at providing a solid base to provide support for those wishing information on LGBT issues.

The work of the pupils impressed LGBT Youth Scotland who made the award last month.

The motion put before the Parliament by Ms Ewing states: "That the Parliament congratulates Lochgelly High School on its success on being awarded the Silver Charter from LGBT Youth Scotland; understands that it is the first school in Fife to achieve this accolade; recognises that the LGBTYS Charter award enables schools to send a positive message that they are a champion of LGBT inclusion where all staff and learners will be safe, supported and included; notes that attaining LGBT Charter status makes a clear statement that equality and diversity are at the heart of a school, and encourages all schools to engage with this programme."

Speaking on Friday afternoon, Ms Ewing said: “It is absolutely fantastic that Lochgelly High School has been awarded Silver Charter status by LGBT Youth Scotland.

"I offer the warmest congratulations to everyone associated with securing this wonderful accolade for the school.

“The LGBTYS Charter award scheme enables schools to send a positive message that they are a champion of LGBT inclusion where all - staff and students alike - will be safe, supported and included.

“Lochgelly High School is the first school in Fife to be receive an award at any level on the LGBTYS Schools Charter scheme and I hope that their example can be a beacon that will encourage other schools to take the steps necessary to secure this recognition.”
