THANKS to support from Cowdenbeath rotarians a group of pupils from Beath High School were able to take part in a major science event at St Andrews University.

The Cowdenbeath Rotary Club donated £250 to the school to pay for a bus to take Higher and Advanced Higher pupils to attend the Royal Society of Chemistry Christmas lecture at St Andrews Uni.

The lecture was facilitated by the Fife and Tayside branch of the British Science association who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

Said Blair Hopcroft, of the science department at Beath: "Forty of our Higher and Advanced higher chemistry pupils had a fantastic day learning about the chemistry of colour including the reason why fireworks are coloured and even saw a chemical sunset!

"We would like to thank the Rotary Club for ensuring that the pupils were able to take advantage of this event."

Club president Norman Black said: "When we heard that the pupils might miss out on this opportunity the membership felt it was only right that we should try to support them getting to St Andrews.

"It was great to meet them before they left and they were all certainly looking forward to being part of this event."
