CARDENDEN Co-op's community support was warmly praised in Saturday when two organisation received a total of £7,000.

Both the John Thomson Committee, who run the children's football tournament in memory of the famous goalkeeper from the village who died in 1931 from injuries sustained in an Old Firm derby, and Cardenden Development Forum's Community Shop, received cheques.

The John Thomson organisation, made up of volunteers who ensure the name of the former Celtic and Scotland 'keeper is never forgotten received £3,416.59.

Meanwhile the highly successful Community Shop raises a lot of valuable cash for community events and causes and they received a cheque for £3,650.31.

On behalf of the Community Forum Rosemary Wallace said: "We really appreciate the funding we have received from the Co-op Charities Aid Foundation.

"Also thanks to Margaret and her team at Cardenden Co-op and the customers for lending us their support".

The Thomson Committee chair Alex Burns added: "This is truly a tremendous gesture by the Co-op staff and customers in Cardenden and we warmly thank them."
