CARDENDEN man Michael Mellon picked up more Invictus Games medals in Australia at the weekend.

Michael Mellon is travelling back from the Invictus Games in Sydney after winning two silvers in sitting volleyball and wheelchair rugby, and a bronze in wheelchair basketball - the last competition of the Games

He was delighted to win the medals and said: "The Invictus Games mean so much to me. I love being back in a military environment.

"It feels great to win a bronze medal in the wheelchair basketball, its a great bunch of players. We have worked really hard over the last seven or eight months".

He added: "I love the team sports, each team is unique with different characters in the group.

"I like different aspects of each of the sports - the passing sides in the basketball, the big hits in the volleyball and in the rugby, which has some big collisions. We have the world's strongest disabled man on our team when he hits you you feel it!

"When I came out in 2005 I had gone from being superfit when I was in the infantry to being much less active due to my injury, I struggled in civvy street with depression. I piled on the weight and went up to 21 stone. "When I lost my leg it was a fresh start. I was determined to get the weight off, to get fit and healthy again. The biggest thing for me has been meeting up with the boys and going to the training camps, you always get loads of fun and banter which carries over into the Games."
