A COWDENBEATH man smeared excrement over the cells of his prison cell after being arrested.

Sean Penman claimed to be “remorseful” for his behaviour but was smirking in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

The Sheriff was not impressed by Penman’s behaviour in the dock or in the police cell, which he described as “pretty disgusting”.

In Court, Penman, 37, of Bridge Street, Cowdenbeath, admitted that on July 11 at Arthur Place, Cowdenbeath, he resisted two police officers and struggled violently with them.

He also admitted that at Dunfermline police station he smeared excrement on the walls and CCTV camera of a cell.

Depute fiscal, Jade Doig, said the police had been called to an incident at around 4pm.

When he was arrested, Penman began lashing out with his arms and legs.

“He was taken to Dunfermline police station and because of his erratic behaviour was put in an observation cell,” added the depute.

“He then began to smear excrement over the cell walls in view of the CCTV camera and also put excrement on the camera.

“The cost of cleaning the cell was £76.”

Sheriff Derek Reekie said: “It’s pretty disgusting.”

Defence solicitor, James Moncrieff, said his client was unemployed and had a background of mental health problems.

The solicitor said Penman had taken a substance and as a result “his memory of events is not great”. He added that his client was “remorseful”.

However, Sheriff Reekie told Penman: “I’m told you’re remorseful but I saw that when the charge was being read out you were finding it amusing.”

The Sheriff called for reports and Penman will be sentenced on November 14.
