BENARTY undertaker Harry Webster will undertaking a dramatic adventure in December to highlight the need for more to be done help homeless people locally and in Scotland in general.

Harry, who runs Benarty Funeral Directors, will be 'homeless' for 24 hours, starting at 9am on Monday December 3, when his home will be the Miners Memorial Garden, at The Shank, in Ballingry.

He will have the most minimal of items with him but as well as highlighting what homeless people face, he hopes to raise a lot of money for Lochgelly Salvation Army, who hold a Christmas Day event for homeless and lonely people, at their Auchterderran Road Hall.

Said the man who's business has continued to grow: "We are now into a time of year which must be so hard for homeless people.

"It is cold and damp and there are concerns where the next meal or cup of tea or coffee is going to come from.

"This is something which affects people locally, in Fife and Scotland in general, and really in the 21st century, more should be done to try to ensure everyone has a secure place to stay."

He added: "I will start my 24 hour vigil at 9am on Monday December 3, and it will end at 9am on Tuesday December 4.

"All I will have with me in the Miners Memorial Garden will be basically a sleeping bag.

"I hope that the public will help by perhaps dropping by with a cuppa or some food a I am aiming to face exactly what a homeless person does on a daily basis.."

Harry is impressed with what Major Mary McDonald and her team at Lochgelly Salvation Army do at Christmas time.

"The Christmas Day meal at the hall in Auchterderran Road hall is so important for so many people so I hope that I can raise a fair amount through my vigil to help Mary and the volunteers."

Mary McDonald is grateful to Harry for what he is set to do to highlight the problem of homelessness, and also his fundraising.

She said: "This really is an amazing gesture by Harry Webster and we cannot thank him enough for backing us.

"I have arranged for the director of the Homeless Programme in Scotland, Malcolm Page, to come down one of the weekends before Christmas to meet Harry."

Donations to the cause can be made to Harry through cash, cheque or bank transfer.
