A MAJOR event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War will feature prize winning Kingdom Brass Band and local singers.

Cowdenbeath Community Council is behind the WWI Concert and Service being held on Sunday November 4 at Dunfermline's Carnegie Hall at 7pm.

After the event is opened by Lochgelly man and Provost of Fife Council, Jim Leishman, Kingdom Brass will play a selection of musical items which will tell the story of the Great War, with images of the conflict depicted on a screen on stage.

This will last for 45 minutes, then after an half hour break, the second part of the evening will be opened by an address from the Lord Lieutenant of Fife and also taking part will be representatives of the Fife Branch of the British Legion with their standards; the Sea Cadets; Air Cadets; Army Cadets; Scouts and Brownies, who will join the band on stage.

Some singers from the Cowdenbeath area will contribute some appropriate numbers and there will be the opportunity for the audience to participate in such numbers as 'The White Cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll Meet Again'.

To bring the curtain down on the evening Lochgelly High School Pipe Band will join Kingdom Brass on stage to play Highland Cathedral.

It is a major undertaking by Cowdenbeath Community Council and chairman Alex Haddow said: "We felt that it was very important to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War and look to harness the talents of local people in a major event.

"We are hoping that people from the Cowdenbeath area will join us in the evening at the Carnegie Hall and it would be especially poignant for any person or family who had someone who served in WWI to be there on the night."

Also joining in on the occasion will be the Cowdenbeath area's MP, Lesley Laird; MSP Annabelle Ewing; and local councillors, Alistair Bain, Alex Campbell, Gary Guichan and Darren Watt.

Tickets for the event are £10 and can be purchased at the Carnegie Hall Box Office or by calling 01383 602302.

The following Sunday the Community Council's Remembrance Day events will take place at the First World War Memorial, at the Public Park, and the at the Town House, where a special Memorial Garden is being set up.
