THE rowers of Lochgelly's Evolution Functional Gym hit the rowing machines for a very good cause.

Some of the Evolution members, including chief coach, Stephen Esslemont, covered the distance of 42,195m individually, and some members completed it as part of a team whereby they would rotate the rower until the distance was covered.

Their target was to raise a lot of funds for Cardenden Play Park Committee.

Said Stephen: "Overall we covered a total of 337,560m with 18 members taking part.

"We managed to raise £1,500 for the Cardenden Play Park Committee.

"This group was started to secure funding and support to create a new safe and fun outdoor play space for the children of the village community near Cardenden Primary School. "We felt this was a great cause to get behind as it was based in the local community and will benefit the children by encouraging outdoor activity and health through play, something we feel very strongly about at the gym."

He added: "Some of our members are involved with the committee so it seemed like the perfect event for us to do.

"The atmosphere was great, lots of positive encouragement and from those taking part and the others that had come along to show moral support!"

The Play Park Committee was set up by parents after the facility behind the school in Carden Avenue was condemned.

They were concerned that Fife Council would be unable to replace the swings and shute and set about funding the improvements themselves.

Their work has seen them a considerable amount of the way to the £80,000 target they set and the money raised by the Evolution rowers has been warmly received by the committee.

The chair of the committee is Islay Dunlop who can be contacted at islaydunlop@hotmail.com. Let me know if you have any further questions. I’ve attached some photos if you want to select any you feel would work.
