TWO CENTRAL Fife students have scooped prestigious Jack Vettriano scholarships in recognition of their creativity, innovation and passion in their Art and Design studies.

Kathleen Gibb, 46, from Kelty, and Craig Carson, 37, from Lumphinnans, were delighted to receive the awards to help them with their studies.

The Fife College students were awarded the scholarships – funded directly by the world renowned artist – through the College’s Adam Smith Foundation, which looks after the College’s scholarship programme. This scholarship is a cash award which is used by the students for materials and equipment to enhance their studies and student experience.

Jack Vettriano, who was raised in Methil before becoming Britain’s most popular artist, has supported the Foundation since 2000. So far his generosity has benefitted around 60 students, enabling them to progress their studies in art and design.

The awards were presented at a recent ceremony at the College’s St Brycedale Campus – attended by Lecturer Frances Barclay, chair of the Adam Smith Foundation John Paterson and Trust Fundraiser Gaynor Jamieson – where three students were presented with their certificates and congratulated on their achievements.

Craig Carson is studying Intermediate Certificate in Art and Design before hoping to progress to Art School. He added: “I am looking at using the award to fund rent on an art studio space to allow me to work on larger projects.”

Kathleen Gibb received her scholarship while studying Intermediate Certificate in Art and Design. “I am keen to pursue my own business creating up-cycled clothing and household products," she said "I am using the scholarship money to purchase a sewing machine and other supplies to support my studies.”

Gaynor Jamieson, Trust Fundraiser, added: “It is through Jack’s continued generosity and support that I am delighted that once again the Adam Smith Foundation is able to recognise students for their hard work and commitment to their course.

“This scholarship enables students to enhance their college experience by giving them the funds to purchase the necessary art supplies or indeed to pay to attend relevant galleries and exhibitions that will widen their knowledge to enhance their future careers.

“Being recognised by such a world-famous artist is an amazing achievement which will help our students to secure further study or employment.”
