VISITORS to Cardenden via train will see a much different sight now that Nanny's Corner has been developed at the entrance/exit to the village station.
Cardenden Development Forum has been working for some years to have the site that was once dominated by a derelict shop upgraded and all their efforts came to fruition on Wednesday when the new look to this part of the village was unveiled by long time community activist Jimmy Robertson.
Wednesday's events for the Development Forum were the end of a long journey by the volunteers.
One of the items on the last Action Plan drawn up by Cardenden people, was the removal of derelict buildings.
The Forum's secretary Rosemary Wallace said: "This was something that Jimmy Robertson did so much to achieve with his campaigning to see the removal of the blots on the landscape and it was great see him unveil the bench in the area of the old Paper Shop, which was one of those blots.
"The Forum bought the derelict Paper Shop with funding from Fife Council and we received excellent backing from The Co-op Charities Aid Foundation towards the landscaping of the area after demolition. "We also received help from John Holden, the builder, and Ross Hepburn, of Lady Helen Nurseries. The P6 pupils from Denend Primary helped plant-up the planters".
The Forum consulted with the village History Group for a name for the area and that’s where the ‘Nanny’s Corner' came from.
Jimmy said that the old derelict shop had dominated the station entrance for far too long and he was delighted to see Nanny's Corner created and what a difference it made, he felt.
The Development Forum is also fighting hard to have the derelict former Youth Centre on Main Street either removed or upgraded.
This large building has been empty for years and is continuing to deteriorate.
