Some of the men spent nearly twenty hours underground endeavouring to recover the ten miners’ bodies.
The main reason for this seemingly lengthy delay, was that the men of the rescue squad, wearing gas masks, had to work very carefully to reverse the air current to carry the noxious gases away from the scene of the explosion by an alternative route far away from the rescuers.
