THE weather was by no means perfect for Crossgates Gala on Saturday but nonetheless it was a fine day for the children and adults who turned out in huge numbers.

This year’s Gala Queen, Eilidh Poole, and her Princesses Beau Simms and Sarah Angus took their place of honour in the parade and despite some heavy clouds around the village marchers set off in fair conditions.

The strong wind meant that those with large banners found it a real challenge.

Gala week got going on the previous Sunday with the fun run events. The 5km for adults attracted a really enthusiastic field who enjoyed very decent weather conditions as did the youngsters who ran the 1 mile event.

There were five aside football tournaments during the week for High School age players, while and the adults and primary players also enjoyed themselves.

Thursday night saw the Wheelbarrow race take place at Humbug Park starting at 6.30pm and there was plenty of high octane action.

Friday saw the big Gala Week Quiz in the Crystal Bar and again there was loads of competition.

Then came Saturday and Gala Day itself with all the Committee hoping for favourable weather conditions but spending most of the morning looking at the heavens.

The forecast was on e of sunny spells and showers with a strong wind and that was was overhead by the time the parade started.

Gala Queen Eilidh and her Princesses were joined in the parade by the Crystal Bar football team parading the Sunday League League Cup they recently won. The theme this year was Super Heroes and there was a significant number in the parade.

Everything left the the Mines Rescue Station at noon and headed to Humbug Park where there was a full programme of activities.

There will be a mix of rides on tap along with a range of inflatables and bungee trampolines. The strong wind made it a bit difficult for some of the rides and things were hit by a heavy shower.

The wristbands which were on sale for £5 enabled access to all activities and kids made full use of these.

In addition there were the five-a-sides finals and also races.

Said the Gala Committee’s Barry Tillier: “The weather was not perfect by any means but at least it was dry for a fair amount of the time which was a big plus although the wind was very strong.

“We have had good support from the village community and it is all about people having a brilliant time and making sure that there support gets the best of days possible.

“Humbug Park was the centre of attention and there was plenty for people of all ages to enjoy.

"It was a good day and indeed, good gala week in Crossgates and I think everyone was able to have fun viritually every day."
