IN a campaign running across the country, the eight safety camera partnerships in Scotland are highlighting the importance of all drivers understanding the speed limits on the roads and how these limits apply to their vehicles.

And drivers in the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area will be very much involved.

Andrew Jones, Fife Safety Camera Partnership Manager, explained, “It is really important for public safety that drivers read speed limit signs and drive within these limits. “However, surveys undertaken by safety camera partnerships indicate there is a bit of confusion over the national speed limit applies sign – the black diagonal stripe on the white background. This is particularly the case among van drivers, many of whom appear to be unaware that most vans are restricted on national speed limit roads. The restriction means that they generally have a limit 10 miles per hour less than cars.” Superintendent Iain Murray, of Police Scotland, Road Policing commented, “Speed is a common factor in the most serious crashes and frequently determines the severity of injuries sustained.

“Speeding is against the law as well as a risk to public safety. The Highway Code makes it clear that the posted speed limits are the maximum and that motorists must drive according to road conditions within the limit.” As part of the ‘Know Your Limits’ campaign, the Fife safety camera partnership will be distributing FREE dashboard stickers showing speed limits for vans to businesses in their local areas. Partnerships also offer assistance to any businesses that would like help to educate their drivers about speed limits or how to manage occupational road risk.
