TIMES readers have the chance to win a pair of tickets to see a Scottish group who have made their name around the world.

We have the tickets for their show at Dunfermline's Alhambra Theatre on Friday September 6 when they will be joined by special guest Dougie McLean.

Back on the remote Scottish island of Tiree in 2005, the raw but contemporary trad quartet that formed Skerryvore could have only dreamed that over the next decade they would become a multi-award winning act that was performing in over 25 countries worldwide and featured as ambassadors for their country in an International advertising campaign for Visit Scotland.

From those traditional roots the band have developed both in size and sound to create a unique fusion of their traditional music and songs with the urban sounds of rock, pop and funk. The band’s ability to fuse traditional Scottish music and rhythms with a range of other genres is a trademark of their distinctive, high energy sound.

The band started off with Tiree brothers Daniel Gillespie and Martin Gillespie, alongside regular Tiree visitor Fraser West and his friend Alec Dalglish, both from Livingston, West Lothian.

The group took their name from the Skerryvore lighthouse that lies 12 miles (19 kilometres) off the coast of Tiree. The group’s present line-up includes Craig Espie, Alan Scobie, Jodie Bremaneson and, since April 2017, Scott Wood. Skerryvore have released five studio albums, with an additional ‘deluxe’ version of one including some live tracks.

Their earlier work was ‘West Coast Ceilidh’ inspired, with Celtic influences which have remained present in all their work. As the band have developed, rock, pop, jazz, Cajun and country influences have all emerged, but the traditional Celtic roots and instrumentation have remained.

Now based in and around Glasgow, Scotland, Skerryvore tour throughout Scotland, in Europe, and in the USA, the Middle East, and in China.

Guest Dougie MacLean is Scotland's pre-eminent singer-songwriter and a national musical treasure” (SingOut USA) who has developed a unique blend of lyrical, 'roots based' songwriting and instrumental composition. He is internationally renowned for his song 'Caledonia', music for 'Last of the Mohicans' and inspired performances.

His songs have been covered by Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald, Ronan Keating, Mary Black, Frankie Miller, Cara Dillon, Kathy Mattea and many other top performers.

He has received two prestigious Tartan Clef Awards, a place in the Scottish Music Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and an OBE!

To win the tickets tell us what Scottish Island Skerryvore was created and send your entry to the Times Office, 17 Bank Street, Lochgelly, KY5 9QQ by Wednesday 10th July.
