JENNIE Lee Library, in Lochgelly, played host to a special event as part of this year’s Fife Local History Week.

‘Away fir the Messages’, a nostalgic event based around Lochgelly’s culinary history, provided both a walk down memory lane and a chat over a cuppa for a group of local people.

In keeping with Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink for 2015, local people were invited to share their memories of delicious delicacies from the area. The group, including residents from Mossview Home, went along to share their memories of buying ‘lippies’ of potatoes, and fondly remembered tasty treats from their childhood days.

Among reminisces of favourite food and drinks such as cloutie dumplings and ginger beer, many had recollections of going for the messages, the numbered yellow baskets at the Co-op, taking empty bottles back and picking some rare sweet delights. Other popular favourites included an ice-cream drink in Mazzoni’s café, and a bag of chips wrapped in old newspaper from Capaldi’s!

Lochgelly Centre Supervisor Ann Belton said, “Everyone really enjoyed the evening and entered eagerly into the discussions. We’d like to thank Bayne’s Bakeries for kindly donating delicious double biscuits and cup-cakes for our special Local History Week event.”
