A NEW book looks at the rivalries between communities which junior football heightens.

Mud, Sweat and Beers follows the humorous adventures of two retired men as they travel round Scotland using only their bus passes.

Their aim is to check out the rivalries between some of Scotland’s most famous junior football clubs and their travels brought them to the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area.

The actual matches were not particularly important to Craig Stevenson and John McKay, as it was talking to the people who run the clubs and the supporters which interested them.

Luckily for the the two travellers, most of these conversations took place in the pubs and clubs around the football grounds and one of the rivalries which took their eye was that between Lochgelly Albert and Dundonald Bluebell.

The two communities, only three miles apart, caught the imagination of the authors and they devote a chapter to it.

Said Craig, “The book not only looks at the rivalries, but also gives an insight into the commitment and work of the various committees who keep their clubs afloat.” Clubs in this area were visited and committee men and women were interviewed, and in many cases photographed.

“Not only did we find a lot of local interest in the book but, as you will appreciate, junior clubs all over Scotland need all the publicity they can get and we are delighted to give an insight into what makes the junior game and clubs tick”.

The book went on sale in all Waterstones Stores from the end of November, priced £8.99.
