TODAY Friday 7th Carnegie Hall, in Dunfermline, plays host to a unique collaboration between three of the finest fiddle players in Europe.

Straddling the tightrope between tradition and innovation perfectly, Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a folk supergroup whose inventive, exceptional live show has to be seen to be believed!

Norway, Sweden and Shetland have three of the richest fiddle traditions in the world, with documented historical links going back hundreds of years. Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is an embodiment of that tradition, comprising Norway’s Olav Luksengård Mjelva, Anders Hall of Sweden and Kevin Henderson from Shetland. Together, they seek to bring those historical links and traditions alive and present them in an exciting new fashion, while also remaining faithful to the roots of each tradition.

Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is the brainchild of Anders Hall, who felt that combining the three distinctive fiddles styles of their respective countries and regions would create a special musical sound and experience. Individually they are regarded as three of the finest young fiddle players currently working in the international folk music scene, while collectively they are now finding themselves increasingly in demand across the world due to their unique collaboration.

Witnessing their live show, it is hard to believe that the music you are listening to could possibly be created by a simple combination of three fiddle players, such is the depth and harmony in their sound. Recent appearances at Celtic Connections and the Shetland Folk Festival have left audiences in no doubt as to their exceptional talents. From the opening bars of the show, you will be carried away by the vitality and vigour of their playing.

Shetland reels, Swedish polskas and Norwegian hallings sit side by side and blend together through use of clever harmony, diverse tones, textures and volumes. The songs are full of pleasant surprises – the arrangements at times not quite going quite where you expect them to, but invariably in harmonious and interesting directions.

This is a must-see show for folk lovers, and the level of virtuoso talent on show cannot be overstated. The show starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are £12, with concessions available at £10.
