WITH a run of one point from eight games Cowdenbeath have to change their form totally around over the last four matches of the Championship season.

Having not scored a league goal at Central Park in 2015 Cowden really need to start sorting things out if they have any hope of avoiding the relegation play-offs and indeed, stopping bottom side Livingston catching them.

After Saturday’s games Cowdenbeath were a point behind eighth placed Alloa while Livi were five behind the Blues in bottom spot.

Cowden meet Dumbarton and Livi at Central Park over the next two weekends and six points from these matches could turn everything around.

In their matches against Falkirk, at Central Park last Tuesday, and Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday, Cowden were in with a real chance of getting points on the board.

Against the Bairns the Fifers were in the match for the entire 90 minutes, but only one moment of slackness saw them lose the single goal of the game and all three points.

At Ibrox on Saturday, Cowden were level at the break, and while they lost a goal early in the second-half they managed to level the game, only to lose three goals in the last ten minutes.

So the grim statistics show that Cowden have not scored a league goal at home since they played Dumbarton in December, so they need to turn it all around against the same opposition on Saturday when the Sons come to town.

Assistant manager Lee Makel, who stepped in to lead the side on Saturday in manager Jimmy Nicholl’s absence with the Northern Ireland squad, is desperately looking for the team to find their shooting boots this weekend.

He was pretty pleased with the way the team operated against Rangers, but he knows that results are needed to get the club away from Alloa and Livingston at the bottom of the table.

“It was pretty harsh to lose 4-1 after posing Rangers so many problems for most of the game,” he said.

“We frustrated them in the first period, although maybe we rode our luck a bit at times, and even when we lost a goal shortly after the break we hit back well and went into the last 15 minutes level.

“I was trying to get a sub on to strengthen the defence when they got the second goal and we went for it after that and they hit us with two late goals. But it was a defeat and we need to turn things around in the next two games to ease our problems.” Cowden will have left-back Kenny Adamson back available for this important fixture while striker Colin Nish may well be called upon to grab goals against his old side.

Dean Brett is making progress after his injury sustained against Hibs but this came may come to early for him.

Without the craft of John Herron, out for the season, the midfield area is short of incisive pace and the management team will have to come up with a plan to create more quality chances for the strike force in these two big games.

One thing is certain, anything less than a win in this one could have a fatal effect on the club’s chances of avoiding the drop.
