Dumbarton 1, Cowdenbeath 2.

SPFL Championship Attendance-756 A TREMENDOUS second-half performance gave Cowden the win they were looking for on Saturday.

The Sons had the better of the first period but Cowdenbeath came back strongly after the break and started to put a lot of pressure on the suspect Dumbarton defence.

Striker Kudus Oyenuga threatended so often in this game and it was fitting that he grabbed the winner.

Along with former Son, Colin Nish, he posed a lot of problems for the hosts and they conceded a lot of corners in the attempt to ‘keep the Blues out.

But eventually the Fifers wore them down and the goals came that were badly needed.

But it has to be remembered that Cowdenbeath had to survive a penalty after Lewis Toshney fouled Gary Fleming but Robbie Thomson came to the rescue with an excellent save.

It capped a fine game for the ‘keeper who twice defied the home side as they thought they were in with a chance of grabbing a goal.

The defensive set-up had Lewis Toshney making his debut and he teamed up with Darren Brownlie in putting in a really hard shift at the back for Cowden.

Kyle Miller and Kenny Adamson provided excellent cover while in midfield Colin Marshall teamed up with Chris Kane to provide the muscle and John Herron the trickery ,and it worked effectively with Thomas O'Brien always on hand to push forward and pose problems for the home side.

All in all a good Cowdenbeath performance where they fiercely contested every ball and were rewarded with three points.

Dumbarton started the game positively and had a few flurries around the Cowden box but the first real shot came in 13 minutes at their end when Oyenuga’s 20 yarder was deflected away by Danny Rogers.

Sons forced two corners, but these were well dealt with by the visitors and then in 22 minutes Adamson joined his attack to fire in a shot which worked Rogers.

However, Dumbarton started to put together a couple of good moves and from one of them, in 33 minutes, they took the lead.

Scott TAGGART had space, after a Scott Linton throw, to fire a shot from around the centre of the box, past Thomson.

It signalled a good spell for Sons and Mitch Megginson fired over and Cowden were happy to get to the interval only one down.

The Blue Brazil came out for the second period in determined mood and Miller’s drive was held by Rogers and then Oyenuga fired just inches too high.

But in 62 minutes Sons had an ideal opportunity to stretch their lead when Toshney upended Fleming but Scott Agnew saw Thomson choose right and pull off a fine diving save.

This inspired Cowdenbeath and two minutes later Nish saw his shot saved and then five minutes later the scores were level.

Cowden worked a good move when Nish fired in a cross which Toshney flicked on and there was BROWNLIE to fire the ball past Rogers from a tight angle.

Sons were in disarray and in 72 minutes Cowdenbeath took the lead. An O'Brien throw was posed questions fopr Dumbarton and OYENUGA found the corner of the net with a well placed shot.

Nish was next to have a go with his shot going inches wide but Dumbarton tried to come back and Andy Graham’s header flew just over.

In the closing minutes Sons piled on the pressure and a earned a couple of corners but the Cowdenbeath defence did brilliantly to keep them out and earn a key win.
