COWDENBEATH will have to defend much better against Partick Thistle this Saturday if they are to get their first home point of the campaign.
That was the view expressed by manager Jimmy Nicholl after Sunday's defeat against Queen of the South.
Cowden fought back bravely into the game in the second-half but some poor home defending saw the visitors get their first Barrs Irn Bru First Division victory.
The Blue Brazil desperately need to start picking up points at home and while the absence of top defenders Joe Mbu and Dene Droudge are not helping the situation the manager felt his team could have kept all three Queen's goals out.
He said, "We could not really have started the game any worse. We got completely caught out by them in only three minutes and the goal helped Queen of the South to settle.
"It was the same story at the start of the second-half when we lost the second goal all to easily and although we fought back well the third goal was also a poor one to lose from our point of view."
He added, "To be honest our first-half performance was very poor. Our passing was slack and we gave the ball away too easily but in the second-half things improved and for a spell we caused them all sorts of problems.
"We were only able to muster one goal, however, and that was simply not enough."
The manager said that the experienced Queen's front line was too streetwise for his rookie defence but he hopes his men have learned from Sunday and will defend much better this Saturday when Partick Thistle are the visitors.
Went on Mr Nicholl, "We have got to start picking up points on our own pitch for we have some really hard away games coming up.
"We will have to defend so much better than we did against Queen's to achieve it and we will still be without Joe Mbu and Dene Droudge for some time yet."
Midfielder Jon Robertson came back against Queen of the South after a spell out injured and did well and he will be a candidate to start against the Jags.
Skipper Mark Baxter is hopeful of being fit for this one and new signing Richard Vauls is also ready to play if needed.
