Alloa 2, Cowdenbeath 1.

A STORMING finish just failed to give Cowdenbeath a point from this re-arranged Barrs Irn Bru fixture at Recreation Park on Tuesday evening.

Cowden had trailed from the 10th minute and when Wasps got a second early in the second period things looked bleak for the Fifers.

But back they came, pulled one back and in the end only great goalkeeping from Alloa last line David Crawford denied them a point.

Craig Winter was recalled in midfield for this one with Mark Baxter at right back and Brian Fairbairn and Jay Stein also restored to the team in ther engine room.

But it was Alloa who started the the smarter side and David Hay, who had a good game in goal for the Fifers, had to make a smart save from John Grant's 20 yarder.

But in the 10th minute the 'keeper was beaten. Grant supplied the cross and Bryan PRUNTY was lying handy to fire a well placed shot wide of Hay.

As Alloa dominated Hay did well to save from Stuart Noble's close range effort and then he grabbed a strong free-kick from Andy Scott.

At last Cowden got going and Gareth Wardlaw should have done better than shoot over from only ten yards out.

Twelve minutes from half-time the Blue Brazil had another chance when midfielder Jon Robertson found space in the middle of the Alloa box but he too blazed over.

But before the interval Hay had to make decent stops from Scott and Gary Carroll.

Cowdenbeath opened the second period well and Brian Fairbairn's curling 20 yarder went just wide but in 56 minutes Alloa struck again.

Hay did well to blocked NOBLE'S first shot from close in and the striker managed to react first to poke the rebound home.

Cowden immediately picked up their game and twice they went close before they pulled opne back in 68 minutes. Fairbairn's cross fell weas perfect for Paul McQUADE to slide the ball past Crawford.

It set up a grandstand finish. Brown Ferguson brought out a good save from Hay but at the other end Wardlaw was just off target before substitute Mark Ramsay tested Crawford and then the 'keeper pulled off a brilliant save from Darren McGregor.

Cowden kept attacking but they just could not get the goal their outfield play deserved.

Alloa Athletic: Crawford; McClune, Bloom; Brown, Walker, Carroll; Grant, Ferguson, Prunty (Gormley 73), Scott (McCafferty 87), Noble. Subs not used, Hall, Stevenson and Philp.
