LIKE the previous week Cowdenbeath’s defeat did not dent their situation at the foot of the table but a win would have pushed them up two places.

While Cowden were losing at Berwick, Edinburgh City were going down at Montrose, and Clyde were being well beaten at home by Elgin City, so it is as you were with Cowden at the foot on five points, City on six and Clyde on eight.

But the fact is that unless Cowden start scoring some goals shortly the other teams will pick up points and start to pull away from them.

The bare facts show that Cowden have conceded just 14 goals in their 10 league games with only three for. That underlines the problem.

And it will not get much easier this weekend with promotion chasing Montrose at Central Park.

Cowdenbeath had their chances at Berwick and manager Billy Brown was disappointed to lose to a late penalty which he felt was a harsh award: “It was almost a re-run of so many of our other games this season.

“The Berwick player just fell over Jordan Garden and it was after a discussion between the referee and the linesman that the penalty was given. It was very, very harsh.

“It is so very frustrating because it was for long spells we were by far the better team.”

He was happy with the way the team defended as a unit but the goal drought continues and despite changing a number of things and trying different combinations the manager cannot seem to get his side to break their duck.

Mr Brown added: “It really is something I have seldom seen in the game. No matter what we try we just cannot seem to get the ball in the net, but we will have to do our utmost to sort that this Saturday for Montrose are a pretty streetwise side and are going well in the table just now.

“We have to believe that goals are going to come and keep on defending like we did on Saturday because we worked well as a team in ensuring they did not have many chances.”

Left-back Shaun Rutherford picked up another knock and had to be subbed after 52 minutes at Berwick and could well be missing this Saturday while right-back Jamie Pyper is still out with his swollen ankle.

It is not responding to treatment so he has been for a scan and hopefully it will get to the bottom of the problem

Meanwhile the Montrose games starts a run of three successive home fixtures for Cowdenbeath. With them and Annan Athletic out of the Scottish Cup the clubs have brought forward their game from December 30 to November 18 and so it will see the Blue Brazil play the Gable Endies, Elgin City and Annan in a run that simply has to yield goals and points.
