Berwick Ran 1, Cowdenbeath 0.
Ladbrokes League 2.
Attendance-487.
ANOTHER blank day for Cowdenbeath and another defeat which leaves them stranded at the foot of the table.
Yet they were in this game right to the last kick but a late penalty proved to be their undoing and there was controversy over the award.
At windy Shielfield Cowden were always competing and they had chances but the small group of fans who were at Berwick must be wondering when they are going to see their favourites score a goal.
That is now four league and cup games without hitting the net and the longer the run goes on the more confidence is sapped.
As has been the case so often this season, especially away from home, Cowdenbeath defended well.
Goalkeeper Dave McGurn dealt effectively with everything that came his way but unfortunately there was nothing he could do about the penalty kick that decided the game. David Syme and Scott Rumsby were solid contributors and in midfield Fraser Mullen worked hard along with Brad Smith but not enough in the way of good chances came from that area. Up from Jordan Garden had a good few attempts as did Cammy Muirhead but there were no goals.
It was the Blues who had a chance in ten minutes when Muirhead tested Robbie McCrorie with a left foot 20 yarder. Berwick were not posing many problems for Cowdenbeath and chances were few and it took until six minutes from the break for the hosts to get a decent shot away when Michael McKenna’s 10 yarder was blocked by Rumsby.
The Blues started the second period in lively fashion and Robbie Buchanan saw McCrorie dive to save his 10 yarder. Cowden continued to look the better team and Buchanan again saw a shot saved. Berwick got back into it and Oliver Fleming hit the Cowden woodwork with a drive, then with ten minutes left McKENNA proved to be the home hero. The striker went down all too easily in the box after Garden appeared to knock the ball away from him with his back and after some lengthy discussion between referee and assistant a penalty was given and McKenna converted.
