COWDENBEATH lost 1-0 for the sixth time this season in William Hill Scottish Cup and they really need a quick change of fortune.
The Blues had plenty of chances, against East Kilbride on Saturday, but simply could not get a goal, but how often has that been said this season, as they lost out on the chance to be at home to Albion Rovers in round three.
The game was almost a re-run of last season’s cup game when EK won 1-0, with Cowdenbeath having a lot of the ball and openings but failing to score.
The visitors did look more threatening than they did in last year’s tie and hit the woodwork three times, but really they had their ‘keeper Jacob Kean to thank for making a tie with in the next round with Albion.
He made several excellent saves, but perhaps he should not have been given a chance, a point not lost on Cowden manager Billy Brown.
He said: “I do not think we can have any complaints about the result at the end of the day.
“Yes we were in the game right until the last kick but we gave away a needless goal and squandered a couple of really good chances and that has been happening too often this season.” He added: “They took their chance well, although it came from an error by us, and we have to remember they did hit our woodwork a few times so all in all I do not think we can complain, although we did have chances.
“The thing is that the negativity of the past three seasons seems to be weighing heavy just now and we are desperately needing a break to turn things around.
“Will it come this Saturday against Stirling Albion? Well I hope so for we are needing to get goals and points.”
Stirling had a poor cup result themselves on Saturday losing five goals to Lowland Leaguers Lothian Thistle at home, although they scored three times themselves, but they are the League 2 leaders.
Added Mr Brown: “We desperately need to get in front in a game no matter where the goal comes from. It would do a lot for the confidence of the players but we are currently looking like we cannot buy a goal.”
Striker Jordan Garden started on Saturday and tested the East Kilbride ‘keeper with shots and headers but like his team mates did not score .
However, he looked a handful for the opposition so the goals may come from him.
Goalkeeper Joe McGovern is out with a cruciate ligament injury so Dave McGurn will keep his place but left-back Shaun Rutherford looks certain to be fit for this week which would allow Harvey Swann to move forward into a more attacking role.
