UNDER a new management team Cowdenbeath need to start racking up wins if they are to get away from the foot of Ladbrokes League 2.

The victory at Berwick and the performance showed what the team is capable of but the fact is they need more of the same in the coming months.

The results on Saturday saw Cowden close the gap with Clyde to five points and nine on Berwick but it is all about the Blues racking up wins.

Gary Locke has been joined by former Hearts assistant boss Billy Brown and former promotion winning captain Neil Irvine as his back-up team and he is wanting his team to maintain the momentum when they take on Montrose at Central Park this Saturday for they need a run of wins to start alarm bells ringing in the teams above them.

He said: “We are in trouble there is no doubt about that but it was a performance at Berwick which gives you a feeling that the team can achieve the wins we need.

"Then the showing against Elgin, one of the promotion challengers, really made you feel that the team can win a lot more games than they will lose.

"But we have to get results on the board quickly and that means looking for full points from the visit of Montrose this weekend."

Cowden will have another really big game next Tuesday, after the Montrose match, when they travel to Broadwood to take on Clyde who are just above them.

It is a classic six pointer so Cowdenbeath are very much in the business part of the season now and they dearly need to win this one.

If they can take full points from these matches then it will make a huge difference to their chances of getting out of trouble.

New boss Gary Locke is confident that he can turn things around and he will have Billy Brown and Neil Irvine there to help him. Liam Fox’s assistant, Neil Hastings has now left the club.

The ex-Hearts, Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers boss will be calling on the experience he has gained at these clubs to turn the tide.

But the board are delighted to get someone of the experience of Gary in and they hope the fans will rally around and cheer the team on to safety over the weeks ahead.

The three of them were at Berwick and are looking to get down to work this week.

Said director David Allan: “Billy Brown will be best remembered as assistant manager to Jim Jefferies at Hearts and he has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

“Neil Irvine, who was called Zorro by the fans when he led the team to promotion in 1992, has leadership qualities and a will to win so we are wanting the fans to get behind the new management team and players and go for it.”

He also thanked Neil Hastings for his work at the club over this season.

Midfielder Brian Ross, who missed the Elgin came because of the traffic snarl up on the Forth Bridge on Tuesday will be available for the Montrose game and fans can look for him stepping in for the recent acquisition,19 year-old David Syme, who made his debut on Tuesday and did well.
