A CONTROVERSIAL decision by referee David Munro saw Cowdenbeath out of action on Saturday while their opponents in the battle to avoid the Ladbrokes League 2 relegation play-offs were in action.

Of these Berwick Rangers picked up full points while Stirling Albion lost and Edinburgh City drew.

It means that the Blues are three points adrift of Stirling and City with a game in hand and of course with Clyde involved in Scottish Cup action this Saturday the match at Broadwood will have to be re-arranged.

It all means that Cowden, while having two matches in hand could fall several points behind their challengers which is very frustrating for all connected with the Central Parkers.

On Saturday continuous rain had caused some water to gather in patches of the Central Park pitch.

However, Elgin City were there and keen to play. Referee Munro took a ball out at around 2pm and bounced it on the pitch only to find it sitting down on the sodden surface.

The forecast was for the conditions to improve though and by 2.30pm the rain was off and and soon after the sun was out with a strong breeze blowing.

The postponement annoyed club officials and it leaves Elgin having to make a midweek trip south.

But for Cowdenbeath boss Liam Fox it means that his team dropped a further point behind at the foot of the table.

He had listed a side for the Elgin game which had Jamie Sneddon in goal for the out of form Dave McGurn and it also included striker Dale Carrick, and midfielder Robbie Buchanan but they will have to wait for their home debuts.

Mr Fox was very frustrated by the postponement: "We were all keyed up for a very important game and then it goes off less than an hour before the start.

"The rain had been heavy and the pitch had taken a battering but it means we will now have another midweek game and of course with Clyde being involved in the Scottish Cup next weekend we will have another blank day.

"We want to be playing games and picking up points with the new lads settling in so it is a blow to have another blank day coming up.

"The facts are that we really need to be playing games and winning to get away from our current position."

So Cowden's next scheduled match is a home game with Annan Athletic on February 18 although the SPFL may squeeze one of the outstanding fixtures in to next Tuesday.
