A RUN of four games undefeated has given Cowdenbeath a bridgehead from which they could prosper in Ladbrokes League 2.

The battling single goal win over third top Clyde moved the Blues on to 16 points and sixth place in the table on Saturday night and narrows the gap on the fourth top club to just six points.

By the same token Cowden are just three above bottom side Montrose, but the important thing for them is to keep the momentum going at Annan Athletic this weekend.

Annan are just above Cowdenbeath so clearly it is another important game in a very tight division.

Cowden boss Liam Fox expressed his delight that the Blue Brazil had given their best defensive performance of the season against the Bully Wee and he hopes they can keep that going in the Borders.

He said: “Clyde are a pretty good side and throughout the 90 minutes chances were few and far between for either team. In matches like that it is important that you keep your concentration and defend solidly as a unit.

“Our three centre-backs were excellent, as was Dave McGurn, but they were well backed up by the other departments and we made sure that kept them out.

“When you do that you always have the chance to work a goal and that was what occurred when we managed to force an error from Clyde and Brian Ross created the opportunity for Kris Renton to win the game.

“Yes we can play better, but it was a great result for us and stretches our unbeaten run to four games and we want to continue to build on that.”

Renton was delighted to be able to take advantage of the slip up by Clyde: “We knew it would be a very hard game but the defence was superb and when we got forward we created a few good chances.

“For the goal Brian managed to put them under pressure and the ball came to me and I knew I just had to keep cool and head it into the net.

“It was a real team effort and if we can keep that sort of form going we can extend the run.”

Mr Fox is hopeful of doing just that at Annan: “Another difficult game but if we can show the same sort of defensive solidity as against Clyde then it will give us a sound base to build on to look for another good result.”

He has no injury worries apart from defender Kenny Adamson, who is looking to start running again very soon, so there are unlike to be any changes, although Burton O’Brien, left out of the midfield on Saturday, could return.
