A COWDENBEATH competitor was in brilliant form at the Fife Carpet Bowls Championships organised by Disability Sport Fife (DSF) held at the Fife Sports Institute.
Bowlers with a physical, sensory or learning disability from throughout Fife travelled to Glenrothes to contest one of seven singles titles and challenge for a place in the Fife team to compete at the National Championships organised by Scottish Disability Sport at Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC) on the first Saturday in February.
DSF members have an excellent record in indoor and outdoor bowls at national level and there is always strong competition from DSF members for a place in the Fife team.
In the section for physically disabled bowlers it was Scottish international Billy Allan, from Cowdenbeath, who won the Fife title after an exciting final against the reigning national carpet bowls champion in the section for wheelchair users, David Thomson from Glenrothes.
Several extra ends had to be played to separate the players. Fortunately at the National Championships they will be competing in different sections.
The intermediate section for physically disabled bowlers was won by one of the most improved players in Fife, Kenny Dow from the Forward Centre. Kenny had a convincing win over his Forward Centre team-mate Theresa Wyse. Each of these bowlers has also qualified for the Fife team for the National Championships
There were three individual sections for male bowlers with a learning disability and throughout the day there were many closely contested ties. In the Group B intermediate section the champion was Jimmy Ramsay (Robert Gough Centre) and the runner-up Jimmy Wood (Dalgairn Centre). Stuart Carlin (St Clair Centre) took third place. In the Group A intermediate section the winner was Kevin Mustard (St Clair Centre) and the runner-up Stuart Melville (West Fife Community Support Services) with Robert Greig (Robert Gough Centre) taking third position after a play off.
The champion in the Mens Open section for bowlers with a learning disability was once again Craig Donaldson from Kinghorn and the St Clair Centre. Craig won the mens outdoor title at the National Championships at the Westburn Park in Aberdeen earlier this year and in Dundee he will be challenging for the carpet bowls title. In the history of the two championships no Scottish bowler has ever held the two titles at the same time and Craig will attempt to be the first. The runners-up trophy went to his Centre team-mate Robert McMahon, from Kirkcaldy, and in third place was Gary Lindsay from the Robert Gough Centre.
