AFTER their recent success in the Four Nations Cup held in Belgium, four members of Cowdenbeath Karate Club finished top of their league tables after the fourth and final round of the Scottish Karate Grand Prix held at Wishaw Sports Centre.

The annual event, which has run for 15 years, attracts some of the top competitors in Scotland, and is always keenly contested.

It has become a quarterly fixture in the club's calendar as it gives fighters of all abilitiesand ages regular competition.

Topping their respective groups and taking gold medals were Mel Maxwell (girls over 4'5"), Nathan Sealey (boys 13-15 years over 58k), Steven Smith (16-18 years) and Jonathon Izatt (senior male heavyweight).

To add to this Alan Goodwin finished second overall, to current Scottish champion Craig Moffat in the senior middleweights and Jack Sneddon and Ben Smith finished second in their leagues.

Club secretary Neil Maxwell praised all those who were successful and said, "This has been our most successful Grand Prix ever.

"To win four titles is fantastic but the fact that they came in a wide range of ages and abilities shows that we have strength and progress right through the club and that is important.

"Well done to our four gold medallists amd runners-up especially as the event is run over four competitions."

The club are currently gearing up for the biggest and most difficult event of the year, the Scottish National Championships at Meadowbank towards the end of this month.
