A BEATH High School youngster is aiming to kick up a storm when he travels to the Open World Tae Kwon Do championships later this month.

First degreee black belt Lewis Hill (13) is a student with Dunfermline-based NP Tae Kwon Do Academy and is one of seven from the club who will travel to Rimini, Italy, for this year’s championships as part of the UTF Scotland squad.

The teenager, who attends the academy’s classes in Kelty Community Centre, will compete in four disciplines - patterns, sparring, special technique and destruction - alongside fellow black belts Dougie Chalmers, Scott Gowens, Paul Gowens and instructors Nik and Louise Purves, while six-year-old colour belt Reese Purves will feature in patterns and sparring.

The annual event will be Lewis’ second world championship and qualified international instructor Nik, who has 20 years experience in the sport, said, “We have seven going from the academy and a squad this size is what we would probably take generally.

“It is a massive event and I am really excited about it.

“It is only the second world championship for Lewis and Scott but it will be great experience for them going into next year and beyond. I think that we have a strong squad overall in the Scotland team and believe we can get a few first and second places. We’re all looking forward to it.” The championships will run from 25th-28th June.
