David Polley was in a class of his own at the Cowdenbeath Racewall on Saturday night going through to win his first Scottish formula II Championship in a race that had plenty of action.
There was a disappointing turn out of cars for the race and despite five visiting drivers the meeting turned out to be an all in one!
The saloon drivers were in good form with Stevie Triggs picking up his first saloon win whilst Robbie Burgoyne came through to win the final.
The three drivers from the south west Graham Harding, Nathan Maidment and Paul Butcher were taking in their third race meeting in Scotland within a week and they were joined on the grid by Polley and Mickey Brennan. Local drivers on the grid included Gregor Turner (Dunfermline), Paul Reid (Cowdenbeath), Ian Thompson (Kennoway) and Gordon Watson (Crossford).
The first formula II race was the Scottish Championship and when the race started Harding led the field away but Turner was edged wide, hit the wall and dropped back but on lap three the race was suspended when Harding"s car stopped on the back straight.
Ally Noble then led the field away but on lap nine the race was again suspended after Watson had spun and was collected by Kevin Smart and a few others including the leaders Noble and James Harris.
This left Polley as the new leader but a false start saw Robin Little and Holly Glen clash and both had to retire. Polley got the race underway but he had Thompson in close order although he was slowly easing away from him.
During the closing stages Thompson slowed to retire allowing Polley to go through for an easy win from Robbie Dawson and Dennis Middler.
Polley won heat two from John Fortune and Harris. There was plenty of close and fast racing in the final with Stuart Mitchell winning from Fraser McLellan and Polley with Reid in seventh place. Polley then won the GN from McLellan, Fortune and Reid with Mitchell in eighth place.
There were only 15 saloon drivers at the track including local drivers Kevin Webster (Dunfermline) and Alan Stirling (Crail).
The opening heat saw Paul Honeyman go through to win from Stevie Triggs and Robin Copland with Stirling in tenth place. Triggs then went through to win heat two leading home Stevie Honeyman and Robbie Burgoyne with Stirling again in tenth place. Chris Carey led the final until the half distance when Neil McLaughlin took over.
However, Burgoyne was closing and finally moved into the lead on the last lap to win from N McLaughlin and S Honeyman with Stirling finishing in ninth after being spun. There were only six hot rods in action including local drivers Billy Bonnar (Ballingry) and Peter Allan (Lochgelly).
James Jamieson won the opening heat from Ian Donaldson and Pete McVay with Allan in fourth place. Stuart Walker then held off Jamieson to win heat two with McVay in third spot just ahead of Bonnar. Jamieson then won the final despite suffering a flat tyre leading home McVay, Walker and Bonnar with Allan in sixth place.
Plenty of close and fast racing in the ministox where the local drivers were Ross Watters (Leven), Raymond Dick (Glenrothes), Kieran Howie (Dunfermline), Sean Farrell (Glenrothes), Kyle Buchan (Rosyth) and Kyle Irvine (Glenrothes).
Heat one saw a shunt which left Marc Fortune and Kyle Anderson sidelined with the win going to Watters who led home Dick and Irvine with Howie seventh and Buchan in eighth. Dick then held off Irvine to win heat two and his first ever win with Lyndsey Clyne in third with Howie in sixth and Buchan in ninth place. The meeting ended with Camie McGowan fending off Dick to record his first ever win and he led home Clyne, Liam Rennie and Irvine with Dick in sixth and Howie in eighth place.
There is no racing until the 18th July when the saloons, stock rods and ministox are in action with the meeting starting at 6.00pm as usual.
