Tam's late strike lands silverware

A LAST minute goal last Wednesday night gave Kelty Hearts the silverware they were looking for this season when they lifted the Maloco Cup at Glenrothes" expense.

It brought the curtain down on a successful season which has seen the side consolidate its place in the East Super League.

However, at the end of a long season this game at Lochore Welfare"s ground seemed a bridge too far as defences easily mopped up everything the attacks could throw at them.

But Kelty had the ball in the net very early on but Tom McGeorge was adjudged to have been in an off-side position when he glanced home.

Glens then started to create some good openings but the Hearts rearguard were in charge and when the interval came there were no goals.

The second period saw more of the same with both teams creating half chances but no takers and it seemed that a penalty shoot-out could be required to separate the teams.

However, in the closing seconds Hearts got the winner when Tom Courts fired the ball home from inside the box.

There was still time, however, for Hearts front man John Martin to get sent-off for a wild lunge at a Glens player. The result gave Hearts their first silverware of the season and manager Stevie Leighton was delighted.

He said, 'It has been a season of continued progress for us.

'We finished fifth in the Super League which is an improvement of two places on last term and to get our hands on this trophy was very satisfying. Perhaps we have let ourselves down a wee bit in the bigger cup competitions but overall it has been a good season.'
