LOCHGELLY boxing star Emma McCulloch could be in line for a British title fight later this year after showcasing her skills at a national training camp.

The 23-year-old was put through her paces alongside Boxing Scotland’s fellow senior and youth champions at the weekend in Glasgow following her Scottish title success last month.

In her first elite bout since taking up the sport last year, Emma created a piece of history as she became Boxing Scotland’s first female elite light flyweight champion by beating Lochend Boxing club’s experienced Johanna Ryan on a split decision at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports centre in Motherwell.

That victory saw her invited to take part in an intensive Easter training camp, where the boxers were put through six rigorous sessions that covered activities such as specific themed runs, open sparring, technical bag and pad work against different styles and opponents.

Test match sparring also took place throughout the weekend for the upcoming GB Three Nation Championship that will be held in Liverpool, and dad Allan told Times Sport, “Boxing Scotland did want her to box in an eight-team tournament in Spain next month, that would include Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Spain, but the lightest weight there was 52kg. She boxes at 48kg and her coach Stevie McGuire wouldn’t let her box at 52kg because she would likely to be fighting girls four or five inches taller than her and a few coming down to that weight.

Stevie and the Scotland coach agreed that she would be hard to beat at 48kg so they are looking at the next tournament after that.

“The English championships take place at the end of the month and there are a few girls involved in that, and there are a few who fight for Northern Ireland.

They could be matched up in quarter-finals or semi-finals to fight for the British title at the end of the year but she is basically part of the Scotland squad now. The difficulty is finding a match for her.” Receiving international recognition in such a short period of time has been a meteoric rise for the Glenrothes Boxing Club star, and Allan continued, “She really enjoyed the experience because there was a lot of technical work involved with the coaches, and she knows that Boxing Scotland will be turning to her at 48kg. She’s come a long way in a short space of time but I think that the years she spent kickboxing before has helped her. The potential was there but Stevie has brought it out of her.”
