KELTY boxer Connor Law continued his winning run in the professional ranks with victory over Latvia’s Marcis Bumbiers on Saturday.

The 22-year-old made light work of his opponent in the Pride of Dundee show at the city’s Caird Hall with a second round knockout to earn his third success from three bouts since leaving the amateur ranks last year. After an even opening round, Law took the fight to his opponent and after sending Bumbiers to the canvas with a swift left and right hook to the body, the Latvian was sent crashing with the same move for a second time where he was counted out by the referee.

A delighted Law tweeted afterwards, “Won tonight, put him down twice in the second round with a body shot, early and home for dinner. 3-0 as a pro! Thanks for all the good lucks and well dones. The support is first class, on to the next one!” Stevie McGuire, Law’s coach at Glenrothes Boxing Club, said, “After the first round I told him to stay away because he’s going to cut you as they were banging heads. He listened and was picking him off at will - it worked a treat. He caught him with a left hook then a right hook to the body that put him down, and he did it again where he was counted out on the canvas. You could tell from the expression on the boy’s face that he was not getting up as he couldn’t get a breath and looked in pain.

“Connor was very impressive; he had good head and body movement and didn’t take many shots. His opponent was a bit heavier than him at 11st 10lbs and Connor weighed in at 11st 7lbs, and I think now he’ll be a middleweight fighter. He’s progressing well.” Law is set to take on another two fights before the end of the current boxing season, the first of which will be next month before a home debut at the Gilvenbank Hotel in Glenrothes on 29th May.

McGuire added, “The plan was always to have five fights this season and he’ll maybe have six in the next, and we might be looking at Scottish title fights then. For the first three years he has to serve his apprenticeship but he’s moving in the right direction.” Meanwhile there was disappointment for Crossgates youngster Connor Hynd at the weekend’s Boxing Scotland School and Juniors Championships, at Ravenscraig.

He missed out on a place in the 2003 30kg schoolboy final after losing to Bravehearts’ Gavin Martin by a split decision.
