DRIVERS, teams and fans can now officially start the countdown to the start of the 2015 Stock Car season at HRP Lochgelly Raceway as the first of two open practice sessions was held this past Saturday at Scotland’s most-modern short oval motorsports facility.

Some absolutely stunning cars were turning their wheels for the first time on the track and the large crowd in attendance were treated to almost FIFTY cars on track during the three hour session.

Prior to the 1pm start time, as the drivers gathered in the pits, it was the turn of the new young drivers to take to the track to complete their junior track tests. These are part of the Oval Racing Council’s measures to ensure that young drivers understand the flag signals etc and that they will be able to race safely with their peers.

Those who have attended HRP Lochgelly Raceway during the past two years can’t help but be impressed by the performances of the amazing 6-11 year olds in the Ninja Karts. Early signs indicate that there will be even more drivers this season which could see turnouts getting towards thirty!

HRP also welcomed five new Ministox drivers to the track this past weekend and the future of stock cars in Scotland certainly looks safe in the hands of these amazing and determined youngsters.

The Superstox look to be a formula very much on the up this season and with seven new drivers already registered; the Superstox could see the largest turnouts in Scotland for any open-wheeled stock car formula during 2015.

Tony Lattka debuted his stunning new car which had been on display at the NEC Show in January but differential trouble brought an early end to a day where he declared himself happy with the car. Kenny McKenzie was the fastest of the open-wheelers but all drivers look to be hitting form at just the right time. It won’t be long until they are joined by drivers from all corners of the Superstox world as the British Championship will be contested on April 18th – the same night as the National Hot Rod European Championship sponsored by Dechmont Forklift Trucks.

Gill Anderson’s 2.0 Hot Rod had also been on display at the Autosports International show and he brought his stunning Zetec-powered Corsa to HRP Lochgelly Raceway this past weekend and looked quick – as did defending track, Scottish and National Points Champion Gordon Alexander. Kenny Purdie debuted his brand new Saxo while Gordon Hendry looked good in his Corsa and was also on hand to offer nephew Gerry some advice as he made his track debut in a stunning Citreon Saxo. The World Championship for 2.0 Hot Rods will be held at HRP Lochgelly Raceway on August 15th, supported by David Philp Commercials and four visitors have already declared their intentions to be at the first meeting on Saturday February 28th.

Despite negative reports on the rumour mill; the Stock Rod formula appears to be in good health heading towards the 2015 season and it was great to see National Points Champion Siobhan Martin proudly displaying her silver roof. Darren McAlpine, Craig Mason and Paul Barron also took to the track and all look well on the pace. We expect a highly competitive year as we head towards the World Championship which will be held at HRP Lochgelly Raceway on June 6th in association with PC Paints & Components.

The 1300 Stock Cars had a large number of cars in attendance and, indeed, early indications suggest that there will be even more drivers on track in 2015 than the previous year. Arguably the best stock car formula in Scotland last year; the 1300 Stock Cars have their British Championship at HRP Lochgelly Raceway on June 6th. Top drivers such as Craig Haxton, Lee Buchan and Fraser Clark took to the track as well as young guns Andrew and Euan Mathieson from Lochgelly. Zak Gilmour and Marc Hughes headed through from the west to get in some laps and also looked good. It promises to be another great year for the 1300 Stock Cars at HRP Lochgelly Raceway – accept no imitations!

Work has also been carried out at the circuit including the installation of a new spectator barrier and the movement of the start/finish line to a more recognisable spot on the track which should make the racing even more exciting. Work continues with regards to the grandstand at this time.

The single biggest change at Hardie Race Promotions this past winter has been the announcement that racing will now take place on Saturday nights from 6pm as opposed to Sunday afternoons. Despite rumours, this was not a decision that was taken lightly and has been done following consultations with drivers, fans, staff and sponsors with the majority in favour of such a move. It is hoped that this decision will enable even more people will be able to come and enjoy the stock car experience. Prices have once again been held for the third year in succession.

Open practice takes place again this Saturday February 21st from 1pm – 4pm and spectators are welcome to come in and have a look – there is no charge for admission. Refreshments will be available.
