KELTY boxer Connor Law says he cannot wait to step into the ring as a professional - despite injury hampering his preparations.

The 22-year-old announced in September that he was leaving the amateur ranks after missing out on the Commonwealth Games and was due to make his bow on 6th October at Glasgow’s iconic St Andrews Sporting Club.

But Connor had to pull out of the bout due to an ongoing back problem that he sustained in a serious car accident in April just four days before he had to step into the ring to fight rival Lewis Benson for the right to represent Team Scotland at 69kg.

Although he has been receiving treatment for the problem, he will have an MRI scan just 10 days before the big night at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility on 15th November, with his physios still unsure of the problem that he says “does restrict” him in training.

He said, “The injury is coming on but I think it could take a long time before it goes away. I would be lying if I said that it doesn’t have an impact as it’s always on your mind that it could hold you back, although I don’t hold back in training. The physios have been saying that it could be a twisted pelvis but they are not 100 per cent sure so we’ll just need to see if the MRI scan can find out exactly what the problem is.

“I’ve been having treatment for so long and it doesn’t seem to be moving forward. It was a serious accident and isn’t something that you can recover from overnight; my car was written off and I ended up going down a ditch, through a fence and into a field. The worst thing for me was my back - which was unbearable - but I also had injuries to my knee and hip. It was the worst time that it could’ve happened but this is a new chapter in my career and I can’t wait to get into the ring.

“I was fortunate to go international with Scotland at amateur level and I was one of the best in Britain. I’m going from that to being a small fish in a big pond but I trust Stevie (McGuire, Connor’s coach) to come up with a plan to beat my opponent as he’s been there and done it. I’m new to the pro game but I have 100 per cent self belief that I can do damage in the pros. You have to believe in yourself because if you question your ability then that’s the wrong attitude to take into the ring. To say I’m excited is an understatement.” Connor will feature in the ‘Into the Furnace’ event presented by Chris Gilmour and Prospect Boxing on Saturday 15th November.
