KELTY kart star, Dean MacDonald, is targeting global glory next month after clinching the 2014 Minimax British Karting Championship title.

The 13-year-old has enjoyed a hugely impressive year on the track, winning the PFI Winter Series and Buckmore Winter Series championships before claiming third-place in the European Championships, and topped it off by finishing top of the standings after the final round at the Shenington Kart Circuit in Oxfordshire on 28th September.

He went into the last race weekend just one point ahead of his main rival, Alex Quinn, and he looked like he may suffer a blow in qualifying as he sat in 22nd spot.

But a superb lap saw the Strawberry Racing driver take pole position as the clock struck zero with Coles Racing’s Quinn in 24th.

Young MacDonald claimed wins in heats one and two to add 60 points to his total and with his English rival finishing in seventh and fourth respectively, he extended his championship lead by 10 points.

That left MacDonald in pole position to claim the title on the final day and although a major accident halted final one with five minutes to go, he finished in second place to extend the gap to 12 points.

But in final two, he found himself in seventh place with Quinn leading while surrounded by his team-mates. But the young Fifer kept his composure to move himself to the front of the pack as the top three broke clear from the rest of the field.

On the last lap he held on comfortably to finish third and clinch the championship in deserved fashion after leading the way from the first round in April.

MacDonald will race in the invitation-only world championships in Valencia and is set to be one of the youngest drivers in the field.
