COWDENBEATH athlete Jack Lawrie was in top form as he secured a hat-trick of gold medals in Aberdeen.

The 18-year-old former Beath High School pupil competed in three events at the Scottish Age Group Championships - the 400 metres, the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles - and came away from the Aberdeen Sports Village with three impressive victories in the under-20s event.

The Pitreavie AAC athlete’s opening race of the day was in his favoured event, the 400m hurdles, and he proved too good for the rest of the field, romping home in a time of 54.70 seconds. His time was 4.6s ahead of second-placed Vp-Glasgow Athletics Club runner Patrick Clark.

With more of a breeze to contend with, the 110m hurdles wasn’t quite as convincing a win for local lad, but he still crossed the line comfortably for the gold medal. His time of 14.31 saw him home 0.9s quicker than his nearest challenger, Aberdeen AAC’s Ryan Hewitson.

In his final event of the day, Jack breezed into the final by comfortably winning his heat in a time of 52.11s. He then capped a superb meet by winning the 400m and setting a new PB of 50.19s in the process. Second-placed Daniel Lafferty, of Shettleston Harriers, finished in 50.99, with Ayr Seaforth AAC’s Matthew Brawley completing the podium in 51.69s.

Afterwards Jack, who is coached by John MacDonald at Pitreavie, said, “I’ve won two titles before on the same day but never three!”
