A CROSSGATES football starlet will go for European glory this month as she takes the field in a major finals for Scotland.

Katey Turner, a striker with Hibernian Ladies, was named in coach Gareth Evans’ squad for the UEFA Women’s under-19 European Championships, which kicked off in Norway on Tuesday with a win.

The Scots, who took on Belgium in their opening group game, qualified for the eight-team tournament in April by claiming top spot in their elite round section in Croatia with victories over the hosts, Iceland and Russia.

17-year-old Turner netted the second goal in the Croatia match as Scotland, who ended the qualifying campaign as the top-scoring nation with 38 goals in six games, progressed to their fourth women’s European Championship at under-19 level.

Turner will team up with Hibees team-mate Lucy Graham and Arsenal’s Caroline Weir, both from Dunfermline, for the event that has pitted Scotland in a tough group with the Netherlands and the hosts as well as Belgium, who knocked Germany out in the elite round.

But with Sweden, Spain, England and the Republic of Ireland completing the line-up in Group B, Turner told Times Sport, “I think that we’ve been quite fortunate to have drawn the teams that we have.

“We have a good side and it makes it a lot easier to go away with the squad that has some of my team-mates from Hibs.

“We’ve qualified as the best team and did well in the elite round, so I just can’t wait to get out there now. I always hoped that I’d be in the squad but it was great to have it confirmed. Hopefully we can go out there and do well.” Proud mum Evelyn added, “I’m delighted as it is the first time that the under-19’s have qualified in a while. I’m really proud of Katey as this is her life and she scored in the Croatia game. There is a lot of good talent within the team and it would be nice to see Scotland do something good on the football side!” Scotland beat Belgium on Tuesday.

Scotland will complete their group fixtures against the Netherlands and Norway.
