IAN Thompson again dominated the formula II racing at the Cowdenbeath Racewall on Saturday night but this time there were no white graders for him to trip over on the last lap of the final, writes our Racewall scribe Jim Turner.

However, his win means that he moves up to the red grade for next week's racing!

Adam O’Dell and Neil Linden were welcome visitors with their

Trevor Calvin and Jason Secker went on to win the Turner Trophies in the Stock rods and 1300 Saloons respectively.

With the formula II National Series started down south Gordon Moodie (Windygates) was missing from the ranks as he sets off to win the coveted silver roof. However, Robbie Dawson, Liam Rennie and Adam Blacklock were back in action after having missed a couple of meetings.

Local drivers in action included Gregor Turner (Dunfermline), Kieran Howie (Dunfermline), and Paul and Craig Reid (Cowdenbeath).

The first race of the night was a white/yellow challenge heat and whilst Colin Forbes led over the opening laps, Turner worked his way through the field to win from Euan Millar and Howie with C. Reid in sixth crossing the line with broken steering.

The opening heat saw Forbes lead the cars away but within a couple of laps Thompson was leading but then Pete Davidson spun on the main straight and the race was suspended. Thompson led the pack away but Turner was moved wide allowing Rennie through into second but he soon had Craig Wallace in close order. Around the half distance Wallace and Rennie swapped places.

Forbes spun on the main straight and whilst Wallace closed up onto the back bumper of Thompson he held on to win with Robbie Dawson snatching third. Heat two was led off by C. Reid but Thompson was soon through into the lead. This time he was not really troubled and he went on to win from Wallace and Dawson.

When the final started Forbes was the early leader but Thompson, who started at the back of the blue graders, was soon through into third and closing quickly onto the leaders.

Thompson was leading by lap three but Rennie had made another good start, closed in on Blacklock sending him wide as he moved into second place. Howie spun out of fifth place on the pit bend and somehow was missed by the pack although he quickly re-started. Wallace was closing in on Rennie with Dawson a lonely fourth whilst Blacklock and Turner were squabbling over fifth place. Thompson was clear at the front of the field whilst Wallace managed to get ahead of Rennie but further back Millar made up three places only to drop back when shunted wide. In the end Thompson picked up his final win leading home Wallace and Rennie.

The 2 litre Saloon drivers were in good form with for some the main aim to qualify for their forthcoming Scottish Championship. Ian McLaughlin has stretched his lead in the race for the track points championship to 60 over Ross Watters but there is still a long way to go before the outcome will be settled.

The opening heat saw Barry Glen hit the front early on and he was still clear at the close leading home Luke Grief and David Hughes with Watters in fifth and just ahead of Irvine with Cunningham in tenth place.

Heat two saw Glen again take the lead early on but this time Grief was making better progress through the field and as the laps dwindled so too did Glen’s lead. On the last bend, Grief edged him wide and dived through on the inside to win. Glen held onto second with Ian McLaughlin in third and just ahead of Irvine with Watters in eighth place.

When the final started Glen out accelerated Robin Copland to lead whilst Ross Graham had made a quick start and he was closing the gap. O’ Dell was running ahead of Graeme Anderson with Watters and Grief not that far adrift.

Graham moved into the lead during the closing stages but McLaughlin was sent wide and out of the race, Grief caught Glen on the last lap to finish in second but Graham was penalised a couple of places handing the win to Grief who was ahead of Glen, Graham and Irvine with Watters in sixth place

The ORCi Stock rods were racing for their Turner Trophy with Jardine Millar making his first appearance of the season. Local drivers included Jim Pitcaithly (Kirkcaldy) and Simon Laing (Springfield).

The opening heat saw James Gray go through to win but Trevor Calvin was right on his back bumper as they crossed the finish line with Leon Stewart in third spot. Heat two saw Calvin take the lead early on before going on to win from Stewart and Cameron Doak with Pitcaithly fifth and Laing again in eighth.

Rob Conway led the cars away when the final started but lost out to Paul Prentice. However, a couple of laps later Calvin was through into the lead.

Behind Gray had fought his way into third and then second whilst Stewart and Doak were running nose to tail for fifth. Gray began to close the gap but Calvin was clear and he went through to win the Turner Trophy from Gray, Prentice and Pitcaithly.

The1300 Saloons had Callum Rennie (Kelty) in the hire car whilst Jeff Cosans had dropped down to the blue grade. Local drivers on the grid included Lee Wilson (Comrie), Jeff Cosans (Dunfermline) and Gordon Myers (Dunfermline).

Heat one saw Dougie Kidd go through to win from Cameron Milne and Jason Secker with Wilson in fifth and just ahead of Cosans and Myers whilst Rennie was tenth. Secker then went on to win heat two where he led home Kidd and Grant McGowan with Wilson in fifth, Myers seventh, Cosans eighth and Rennie in tenth.

The opening lap of the final was quite dramatic with Kidd’s car shedding a wheel and he spun onto the centre green as a result.

Lisa Freebairn led on the re-start but on lap three Milne was ahead but not that far behind McGowan was running ahead of Secker as they worked their way through the field.

McGowan moved into the lead with Secker following him through the gap and then as the laps began to dwindle Secker made contact with McGowan to send him spinning. This left Secker clear and he went through to win the Turner Trophy from Milne and Wilson with Myers sixth and Rennie in eighth place.

This Saturday is going to be one for the crash 'n spin brigade as the 2 Litres fight it out for their Scottish Championship. Already there are over 30 cars booked in and that number is likely to increase before the end of the week. Backing the bangers are the formula IIs, the ministox, the prostox basics and the microf2s.

The Microf2 drivers will roll out onto the track at 5.45pm to get the meeting started although the main meeting will start at 6pm as usual.
