A HAWS diehard who coached in local football for around half a century enjoyed star treatment on Saturday - thanks to family with Primrose.

Davy Dair, 74, was treated to hospitality at the big derby clash by son Alan, who is a coach with Crossgates Primrose 2011s, for whom his son, Darroch, plays.

He and his team were mascots for the game while another of Davy’s grandsons, Ethan, plays for the Primrose’s 2010 team and was also there to enjoy the match with the family.

The meeting of the clubs was a special occasion for the family, with Davy’s oldest brother Tom – with whom he scouted for Craig Levein during his early managerial career at Cowdenbeath – having played a part in reforming Crossgates in 1983 after they had folded in 1960.

Another of Davy’s brothers, John, married Liz, the sister of the great Jim Baxter, while his nephews – Jason and Lee – both went on to play professionally for the likes of the Blue Brazil, the Pars and Raith Rovers.

Those he coached included former Scotland striker Gordon Durie, at Hill of Beath Swifts, and ex-Dunfermline and Aberdeen midfielder Craig Robertson, as well as Primrose boss Alan Campbell, and his Haws counterpart, Kevin Fotheringham.

Alan said: “After he gave up the coaching, he picked up following the Haws home and away. He was happy with the result!

“He didn’t know I was arranging it and he had a good day.”
