COWDENBEATH’S match with Elgin City on Saturday was postponed by the match referee due to areas of the pitch being ‘dangerous’.

City, although totally shocked by the decision, made a statement shortly after the referee made his thoughts known, blaming the dry weather experienced over recent weeks causing problems for their ground staff.

The thing is Cowden were at the stadium and the travelling fans were on their way to the the ground when the decision was made.

There was general agreement among everyone at Borough Briggs that nothing like this had been seen before.

Match whistler Gavin Ross was highly concerned about an area of the surface which had become very rough due to the dry conditions.

In their statement Elgin said: “Elgin City FC wish to announce that today’s match with Cowdenbeath FC has been cancelled by the match referee.

“This is due to a small area of the pitch being deemed unplayable.

“This is down to the continuous dry conditions experienced in the local area over the summer. We apologise to both sets of supporters for this inconvenience.

“The rearranged fixture will be announced in due course.”

Chairman Graham Tatters said later: “It was a total nightmare as people were here for the game.

“It was an issue with the top left corner of the pitch. It was been starved of water with no rain in the area for nine weeks.

“There is no real growth, the grass in that area of the pitch is brown and there is a bit of gravel left from sand that was put down.

“I can do many things but unfortunately I cannot make rain.”

The thing is Elgin have played three games at home this season and Mr Tatters added: “We have not had a problem with games on it this season but the referee has made this decision.”

So it meant that while City and the Blue Brazil were idle the other teams in Ladbrokes League 2 were in action and it meant that Albion Rovers, Stirling Albion and Berwick Rangers all lost while Peterhead made it 10 points from three games as did Annan Athletic and Edinburgh City are on nine.

Next week’s opponents Queen’s Park are on seven so the chance was lost for Cowdenbeath to close in on fourth top Elgin.

A quite bizarre circumstance which had all forms of media totally bemused.

Now Cowdenbeath are faced with having to head north on a Tuesday night.
