AFTER their derby win over Raith, Cowdenbeath will be looking to build on that base when Cove Rangers come to Central Park on Saturday in the third round of Betfred Cup games.

When this competition paired the teams that met in a stormy League 2 Play-off final in May at Central, there were concerns that things might boil over again.

But this is a completely different fixture and it is likely to be a good open match with both teams looking for the three points which could boost their cause.

To win so well, albeit at Methil on Saturday, over Rovers, Cowdenbeath will go into this game looking to add another three points to their tally but Cove gave a good account of themselves against Championship side Inverness Caley Thistle on Saturday, so like the play-off game, it will be a tough fixture for the Blues.

Manager Gary Bollan was delighted with the way is team tackled League 1 Rovers at New Bayview and wants more of the same this weekend.

He said: “We worked very well as a team on Saturday, especially defending well as a unit.

“From that base we were able to build some really good attacks and scored two cracking goals.

“To be fair we could have scored more and I was pleased with the quality of our build up play.”

He knows how tough Cove will be and wants more of the same from Saturday.

He added: “I would like to think that we can produce the same quality of performance that we had against Raith.

“We kept the ball well and created some nice openings and if we do the same in this game we can win it which would keep us in the mix in the section.”

The manager may rely on the back four which did so well at New Bayview with David Marsh in central defence but it is unlikely there will be too many changes in midfield.

Brad Smith, after his shin splint problem during pre-season training, will be fit and raring to go.

If Cowden could win it it will set them up with the chance of going to Tynecastle next Tuesday and causing a real upset by beating Hearts to open up the section.

It is £10 entry for the Hearts match and £5 concessions but it is tickets only and briefs can be bought at the club office.
