COWDENBEATH will not be running a team in the new reserve league structure planned by the SPFL.

The club had wanted to do so but a change in the proposals has left the club feeling that the travelling involved, which would include going to Stranraer and Ayr in midweek, would not be beneficial for the young players who would be involved.

Director David Allan said: "Most fans will be aware that as part of “Project Brave”, the Development/Under-20 Leagues will not continue this coming season and will now be replaced by Reserve Leagues.

"Cowdenbeath FC expressed its interest in participating in the Reserve League structure with the intention of continuing to give Academy and young players the opportunity to play against more experienced players.

"Unfortunately, there has been muted interest from Clubs. Previously there were eight East Development League teams and nine West Development League teams, but only 12 clubs overall applied to participate for the season ahead.

"The SPFL have now informed Clubs there will not be an East/West split and that the Reserve League will be a National League."

Mr Allan added: "Unfortunately, Cowdenbeath FC does not believe this to be a viable option and midweek evening travel to grounds including Berwick, Ayr and Stranraer would not be appropriate for our young players, many of whom are still at school. "Regrettably, therefore, Cowdenbeath FC will not participate in the SPFL Reserve League structure this coming season.

"The Club retains its links with the Fife Elite Football Academy and intends to continue to develop and nurture local football talent".
