KELTY Primary School will represent West Fife in a regional finals next month after finishing top of the class in a recent sportshall competition.

They were part of a record 1000 primary school pupils who sprinted, jumped and threw themselves into action during a three-day event at Dunfermline's Carnegie Leisure Centre before the festive holidays.

Youngsters in P4-P7 from across the area took part in the Run, Jump and Throw Sportshall Athletics event that was organised by Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council.

It is part of a series of events across eight sports that they organise and offer to primary schools throughout the year and is supported by Active Schools Fife, the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust.

Pupils took part in a variety of events and winners Kelty - alongside runners-up Dalgety Bay and third-placed St Margaret's primaries - will have the chance to progress to the Fife and Tayside Sportshall Athletics finals as the Kingdom's representatives.

Sportshall provides an ideal format in which to introduce youngsters to athletics and multi-skills competition, working as part of a team, encouraging them to compete in a fun, team-based environment, and learn physical literacy and basic movement skills.

Events are organised across local authorities in Scotland, leading to regional finals that take place between February and April.

In January, Kelty also reached the regional finals having gone all the way in 2016.

Points awarded to the top three schools go towards the final total that will determine the winners of the Sports School of the Year Award, presented at the Sports Council’s annual awards ceremony in February.
