COWDENBEATH Bowling Club entertained friends from Kelty on Saturday, writes Jack High.

Lindsay Black welcomed Bobby Strachan and his players to Cowdenbeath and a good game ensued with some good bowling on display.

The scores were as follows (Cowdenbeath skips first), Lindsay Black 18 Bobby Strachan 18, R Reekie 21 P Clarke 9, D Leitch Jnr 11 J Bewick 13, A Somerville 11 B Clarke 16. Cowdenbeath 61 Kelty 56.

There was an objection lodged that Cowdenbeath had played an illegible player and were docked 5 shots - so it ended up a draw... Theres' a surprise.

On Sunday the semi-finals and final of the rinks competition were played.

John Allan, Davie Duff, Roy Lawson and Lenny King played George Beattie, Brian Simpson, Davie McKay and Wullie Wightman.

It was a close game with four ends to go as there was only one shot in it.

Wullie then scored on the next three to go seven up. They played the last end but Wullie and Co saw out the game.

In the other semi-final, Lee Connor, Lindsay Black, Mitch Drysdale and Andy Johnstone played Alan Leishman, Derek Easson, Steven Hunter and Robert McFarlane. There were a lot of excellent heads with close bowls and a few ends where the shot changed hands five or six times.

Andy's rink got off to a great start, going 7-0 up after four ends. They maintained the pressure and forced Robert to play a lot of running bowls - which the rink did not suit. Andy's team all played well and went on to win 18-7. The game was broken up by a couple of heavy showers.

In the final Andy's team started well against Wullie's and were 8-2 up then lost a single and a five to level the game.

The game was level a further four times with both teams taking the lead. At 13-13, Andy's rink picked up a good four, then a two then a single to be seven up with one to play. Wullie and his team shook hands at that point.

That was the sixth year in a row that Andy, Mitch and Lindsay have won the rinks, previously with Billy Allan but Lee Connor stepped in at lead this year and contributed well to both wins.

There are still semi-finals and finals to be played as there were a few cancelled due to the green flooding during the recent heavy rains.

This week's teams have been selected for the Thane of Fife friendly.

On Saturday at Lumphinnans BC the annual charity competition took place.

The pairs played a round robin format and after the five games four teams were level on six points, but it was the pair of Robert Stuart and Edward Law who came out on top with the best shots difference. Congratulations to Robert and Edward who won two tickets to our Comedians' Brunch courtesy of William Marnoch.

£200 was raised for our chosen charity this year which is Fairway Fife. A big thank-you goes to everyone who made donations.

The final of the Swan Cup took place on Sunday afternoon between Mark Mitchell and Niall McCall with Neil edging out Mark 21-11.
