ANOTHER good week for Cowdenbeath Bowling Club with the highlight being Mary McKay, Emma Conner and Esther Beattie winning the District 8 Scottish Triples for the third year running confirming their attendance at Northfield, Ayr for the Scottish finals, writes Jack High.

This is the first time in Cowdenbeath's history that at least ten people from the club will compete there as the Men's Triples and Senior Fours had already qualified.

Billy Allan and Barbara McMillan have also to play in their respective fields to qualify for the Disabled Sections.

The Ladies qualified in a tense match at Lochore in the finals on Saturday against Aberdour.

The rink was tricky on one side so both teams opted to play the vast majority on the same hands.

Cowdenbeath got off to a slightly better start and were five up with six to play, but Aberdour managed to level the score at 14-14 with two ends to play. Cowdenbeath then picked up a five at the penultimate end when the opposing skip played heavy bowls and missed. They then scored a two to seal victory. Well done the ladies, a great achievement. Cowdenbeath won the Ladies triples in 2015 and lost in the quarter-final to the winners last year so are obviously a force to be reckoned with. Good luck to all at the National finals.

On Wednesday Lindsay Black travelled to Hamilton for the Police Home International series.

Scotland retained the title, again, with some excellent performances. Eddlewood is the green where the national top ten finals were held. Not the best of greens.

In the league, Crossgates visited Cowdenbeath.

Andy Johnstone's rink won by 12, Robert McFarlane's rink won by a few and Paul Jamieson's rink, who lost heavily last week, were level playing the last and lying shot with a bowl to come, lost for the third time this season with the opposition winning it with their last bowl.

That is five or six individual games that Cowdenbeath have lost by one shot and a couple of draws sneaked with the last bowl by opponents. Cowdenbeath are firmly in the middle of the division at the half way stage.

On Friday the quarter-finals of the West Fife Competitions were played.

At Lumphinnans, George Beattie, Davie McKay, substitute for Derek Easson - Eric McMillan and Lindsay Black played a strong rink from Abbeyview in the senior fours Alex Syme Trophy.

They got off to a fair start and kept scoring singles. They were 12-7 up after 13 ends and scored a four to finish it.

In the Scotscastle Triples, the defending champions also had a substitute with Steven Hunter coming in at second as Willie Wightman was playing golf!

John Allan at lead had a very good game against the Lochgelly triple, Steven did his bit in the middle and Paul Jamieson played some very good bowls when required. They were four up playing the last and lost a two with the bowls well mixed.

In the Peace Fours, Alan Leishman, Peter Graham, Andy Johnstone and Robert McFarlane played at Dalgety Bay against Bowhill.

The pace of the green was not bad but it was very difficult to find a road. They swapped shots for the first eight ends then Cowdenbeath upped their game to win convincingly.

On Saturday the friendly game was at Kirkcaldy Victoria where four rinks and a triple played.

Vice-president Gerry Mackie welcomed vice president Lindsay Black. The scores are as follows; B Reekie 14 A Walsh 14, D Leitch 10 J Rollo 20, L Black 11 G Mackie 11, D Duff 17 J Smith 15 and C Sommerville 16 M Wilson 21 a total of 68-81 so Cowdenbeath lost by thirteen shots.

On Sunday the first internal competition was played on Cowdenbeath green. The Haldane trophy two bowl singles was won by Mitch Drysdale, who beat Andy Johnstone 7-6 in a very good final. There were some wayward bowls during the tournament 'due entirely to the wind'.. A good day was had by all and Helen and David Hunt provided cup cakes as a nice surprise to top it off.
