THE Cardenden Boxing Club held its annual fundraising boxing show in front of a sell out crowd who witnessed a truly great promotion which featured seven local boxers showcasing their skills to a capacity crowd.

There was some great performances from the Cardenden fighters who were a credit to the tradition of the club.

The first local boxer in action was schoolboy Aiden Wilson and at 50kg he was matched against Chirnside Warrior Cameron Walker.

Walker, taller with a long left hand reach, tried to dominate with his height advantage, but the Cardenden scrapper kept close to his opponent and kept him on his back foot. In round two Aiden began by forcing the Chirnside boxer to retreat

as the Cardenden boxer began to dominate and score with good body shots.

Round 3 saw more of the same as Aiden forced his opponent to seek refuge on the ropes and was a clear winner on points.

Next Cardenden boxer in action was middlewight Ricky Carlin v Rosyth boxer Craig Henderson and round 1 saw both boxers engage in full contact right from the bell with Ricky forcing his opponent to take a standing count towards the end of the round.

Round 2, saw the Rosyth boxer change his tactics and he produced some good counter punching, this pushed Ricky into another gear which forced Henderson to take another 8 count with the referee calling a halt to the contest.

The third Cardenden boxer was Ian Fleming at welterweight his opponent was the Sparta boxing academy club Andy McDonald very tactical bout with lots of clever boxing with the Cardenden boxer scoring with some great counter punching, Ian kept up the pressure and finished up a worthy winner.

Next Cardenden boxer up was Mikey Burns having his first contest against Galashiels boxer Conor Malcolm. In the first

round the local boxer chased his opponent around the ring scoring with some deadly left hand leads and began to establish a good lead he continued to keep up the pressure and displayed some real boxing craft that we would expect from more experienced boxer he ran out a worthy points winner.

A Cardenden schoolboy was the next local in the ring, Eastern District champion Nathan Bell was matched against the lad from Glasgow North John Dorran and it saw some really clever boxing from both in a really close bout with the West coast boxer winning on a split decision.

Lightweight schoolboy international boxer, Kieran Heggie was up against the very much fancied Shire boxer Kris Slowey and both lads gave it their all with the bout going one way then the other and the Cardenden pugilist tried to raise the pace in the last round but was unlucky to lose on a split decision.

Last Cardenden boxer in action was Bradley Grieve at welterweight who faced Edinburgh boxer from the Clovenstone Club Paul Wicks.

This was not a contest for the faint hearted with both boxers not prepared to give an inch, and this continued for the full three rounds with Bradley winning comfortably on points.

Cardenden boxer Dean Torrence was disappionted when his opponent called of at short notice, however, he gave an exhibition against a Scottish international boxer from the Glasgow, Tommy Hamilton.

Club secretary Willie Burns said: "This was an excellent night of boxing, to a capacity crowd, and matchmaker-coach, James White did a great job, in matching the show, and coach Pete Munn some excellent work in the Cardenden corner.

"The prestigious Jimmy Gardiner Memorial Trophy was awarded to Mikey Burns."
